Eighteenth-century England was the envy of Europe for its liberal institutions and political freedom. Three artists exercised their right to social criticism: Hogarth, with his 'modern moral subjects'; Gillray, as a vicious satirist; and Rowlandson, who found comedy in all walks of life.
