Treasures of the Hermitage

on BBC Two England

The Raphael Loggia
Narrated by Marius Goring
The last of three programmes
One of the glories of Leningrad's Hermitage Museum is, in fact, a fake. Catherine the Great had a passion for the classical art of Europe. When in Rome, she fell in love with Raphael's designs for a magnificent gallery commissioned by Popes Leo X and Julius II. She had to have just such a gallery herself and so an extraordinary piece of Renaissance Italy was built in the colder climate of St Petersburg.
