Written and presented by Alec Clifton-Taylor
"From the train it looks as if the railway is going to run straight through the transept, but at the last moment it swerves to the, right, and, thank goodness, the second finest non-cathedral church in England remains intact."
Alec Clifton-Taylor ends this series in a little-known town "in what I shall continue to call the East Riding of Yorkshire". Its prize possession is the medieval Minster church, but there are also some fine Georgian brick houses with elegant staircases and cornices and some excellent stucco. The only Wood that really shows is "Victorian black and white, fortunately shortlived", but the pantiles are a great-asset and help to make Beverley a perfect example of the pattern of English building.

Elegantly directed by Visconti,
Conversation Piece concludes this season with a finely controlled performance by Burt Lancaster as the solitary professor who has filled his grand apartment in Rome with 18th-century paintings of family groups known as conversation pieces'. But when the Countess Brumonti lures the reclusive professor into accepting some tenants, he finds his privacy and self-composure increasingly disrupted by the sexually ambiguous presence of the Countess's handsome young German lover.
