The Gypsy Baron

on BBC Two England

A new film version of the cele brated JOHANN STRAUSS operetta, Der Zigeunerbaron.
Libretto by IGNAZ SCHNITZER , after the novel Saffi, by MAURUS JOKAI
Johann Strauss the younger - the ' waltz king ' - was nearly 60 when he completed The Gypsy Baron. Full of familiar waltzes and lyrical love songs, it tells a colourful story of gypsy bands, hidden treasure, long-lost wives and secret marriages. In this production Count Carnero, the officious and bumbling Commissioner for Public Morals, acts as narrator, detailing the complex train of events set off when he escorts an exiled young adventurer, Sandor Barinkay , back to his father's estates in Hungary.
