The Big Sleep opens a season of films from the writings of Raymond Chandler, starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall

Chandler's greatest creation, the private detective Philip Marlowe, is here portrayed by Bogart in a masterly performance - at once laconic and tough, yet finally melting into the protective arms of Miss Bacall. Marlowe is involved with the ultra-rich Sternwood family, blackmail and drugs and the 'big sleep' - known to most of us as death.
