Tonight, Horizon tells the extraordinary story of the Jari project ... a private city state the size of Wales carved out of the Amazon jungle by American billionaire Daniel K. Ludwig.
While arguments rage about the destruction of the rain forest, Ludwig has cleared vast areas of jungle and replanted with the biggest man-made forest in the world ... a mixture of pine and a fast-growing tree which matures in ten short years to provide both pulp and timber. Rice and china-clay are secondary industries. The project has created a mixed community of Americans and Brazilians, already putting down roots and creating traditions.
The project raises a multitude of questions - economic, ecological and political. It's a pioneering high-risk enterprise on a scale which could only have been tackled by the richest man in the world. Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN
