On 1 October 1908, the first Model T motor car was delivered to the buyer. 'Homely as a mule and useful as a pair of shoes.' Seventy years later, as a result of strikes at Dagenham, there were no cars on the Ford Stand at the Birmingham Motor Show -except the Model T. Does the responsibility for some of the industry's current industrial problems lie in the history of the company and the temperament of the man who founded it - Henry Ford ?
This programme tells the story of Ford who, in 1911, built Highland Park, Detroit - the largest factory in the world. The man who introduced the production line and who set out with the humanitarian ideal of producing cheap cars for the people and ended up defying his own striking workers. Ford seemed to embody the American dream but bequeathed to the world, in many people's opinion, a nightmare legacy.

continues the season of films from the writings Of RAYMOND CHANDLER starring Robert Montgomery Audrey Totter
In this third 'Marlowe' thriller, Chandler's detective is played-and directed - by Robert Montgomery in one of the most unusual films ever made. The central character is depicted subjectively by the movie-camera, so the ace detective is only seen in reflection. Even so, it does not stop Marlowe being involved in plenty of complicated and exciting adventures, attempting to unravel the mystery of the lady found wet - and very dead - in the lake.
