This colourful biography of the-German-born composer George Frideric Handel focuses on the years when Handel's work was out of favour with the British Court. Deprived of royal patronage and plagued by debtors, the struggling composer nevertheless succeeded in writing a master-piece - the sacred oratorio Messiah which was first performed in Dublin in April 1742.

Alfred Perks, farmer and wheel-wright, has been kept so busy by his neighbours in Shropshire that in 30 years he has never been away from his workshop for more than two days at a time. He mends their carts, barns and water-wheels, repairs the jumps on the race-course, refits the pews in the chapel, looks after the church clock and despatches the dead in coffins wrought by his own fastidious hands. The 1979 Expedition Film Competition for The Mick Burke Award from the Royal Geographical Society, London
Underground in the limestone caves of Turkey; tropical wildlife on a Caribbean island; through the Sudanese tribal lands of North Africa.
The first of two programmes featuring films made by expedition teams competing for the Award made by the BBC Natural History Unit and the Royal Geographical Society. The teams, using Super 8mm equipment, were all inexperienced film- makers - among them, students and teachers, a writer, housewife, an artist and salesman. It is their work that the Judging Panel will assess to choose the winners of a competition designed to encourage some of the many expeditions that set out from the United Kingdom every year, to make a film of their adventures.
