Highlights of last night's race on the tight 2m circuit that twists its way around the streets of the Pacific resort of Long Beach - a track that's been called 'The Monaco of the West'. After two wins for France's Jacques Laffite and the Ligier team in South America, and a Ferrari 1-2 in South Africa, last year's winner Carlos Rautemann and World Champion Mario Andretti, winner in 1977, were out to score the first Lotus victory of 1979.

A Mediterranean Prospect
The Mediterranean Sea is said to be slowly dying. Every town from Athens to Alexandria, from Barcelona to Beirut uses it as a dump for raw sewage and industrial effluent.
But, as a result of determined efforts by a Yugoslav marine biologist who now runs the United Nations Mediterranean Action Plan, and by concerned groups in the coastal towns and villages, something is being done.
This film shows how the mayor of a small town in Turkey deals with too much detergent, how a French industrial complex the size of Paris has reduced its pollution by 90 per cent, how scientists in Athens plan to use the sea itself to keep tourist beaches healthy, how the Egyptians are struggling with pollution caused by poverty and how the Algerians have changed their minds.
But can there really be effective co-operation between European and African countries, between Turkey and Greece, between Israel and Syria? Can the survival of their sea draw them together in a way that other international problems cannot?

The King and I
For David Oxtoby, Elvis is king. He's been painting rock 'n' roll stars since the 50s, much to the bemusement of the art establishment. Most of the paintings in this film-of Presley, Haley, Gene Vincent etc - were stolen and subsequently burnt by Italian bandits and so Arena presents a unique chance to view the work of this entertaining but ill-starred artist.

Journey to the Surface of the Earth
Last year the artist Mark Boyle attained the singular distinction of occupying the entire British pavilion at the Venice Biennale astonishing visitors with a Sardinian mountainside, a ploughed field and a Liverpool pavement. Since pioneering light shows with Jimi Hendrix and the Soft Machine he has devoted his life to travelling the world, recreating with uncanny accuracy six-foot-square replicas of the Earth's surface.

Ian Wilson regarded himself as ' conversion proof' until he came across the famous Shroud of Turin. His researches into this historical mystery had an unexpected effect on his life.
' As medical and historical details more and more pointed to the Shroud being genuine, I began to realise I was studying the image of a real man.'
