A tribute to the British national drink and all who serve it. We take 196,000,000 cups of tea a day. We reach for a cup in a crisis; we break for tea when we can.
And the heroines of our favourite brew are the ladies of the tea trolley.
Alice, Dolly, Edna and Margaret dispense advice and succour, entertainment and good cheer to their thirsty customers.
Jack and Daisy, who lost their partners years ago, tea dance their blues away in the Palm Court once a week. WVS ladies tell stirring tales of how a nice cuppa kept them going in the Blitz. Tough men on army manoeuvres prepare their own special brew. And so do the chimps. But over all hangs the threat of the dispenser ... Producer MARK CHAPMAN Editor EDWARD MIRZOEFF

Place of the Ancient King
A mountain revered as a god; a strange plant which flowers just once in its long life then dies; and the signs of an ancient sorcerer carved in the rocks. These are just a few of the mysteries uncovered 80 years ago in a remote Alpine valley by the English naturalist and clergyman, Clarence Bicknell. Today, the Val des Merveilles has become the Mercantour National Park. Alongside the natural and man-made marvels, one can still delight in a wealth of flowers and wildlife.

Can motorcycling be made safer without destroying its inherent excitement? The 'Feet First' design concept is claimed to offer just that. Thousands of migrating geese invade the Scottish island of Islay ever year.
For bird-watchers the place is a unique and unspoilt paradise. But for some local crofters the birds are a pest, and for visiting hunting parties they're fair game. Is there a balance to be struck? A series of films about our lives - now
Who Needs a Machine Gunner? Colin Talbot has been out of work since 1980. It's not for want of trying. He trudges regularly to the nearest phone box, a mile away - but the message seems to be that, at 42, he's past it. He served in the army for 14 years, but his wife Leslie couldn't stand the life. Now they are in an isolated council house in rural Herefordshire, five miles from the nearest town. They have three children, with another on the way. Their total weekly income is E75.75. They don't want to be kept by the State.
There are glimpses of a life free from the shadow of long-term unemployment - a voluntary evening with the Territorials, even the rare treat of a picnic at the seaside. Then, for the Talbots, there's a happy surprise....
