More from the Musical Mariner
David Fanshawe , music collector and composer, is off again. Tonight, he wanders among the paradise islands of Tahiti in search of the traditional music of the South Seas. Here, he finds music which is hip-swaying and seductive - a distinct change from the primitive rhythms and ululations he recorded in New Guinea in last week's film.
To end his long Pacific odyssey - he's been travelling for nearly ten years - David flies to one of the most isolated specks on earth: Easter Island. Here the songs are different again: part South Seas, part Spanish ... 'I must record them all before they're gone, before it is too late.'

written by John Harvey
based on "The Old Wives' Tale" by Arnold Bennett
The first of six parts with Patricia Routledge and Alfred Burke

Headstrong and proud, Sophia struggles against the wishes of her family while her sister Constance - quiet, but no less passionate - accepts a future in the family draper's shop. Then, when the Wakes Week festivities are at their height, Sophia's impetuous and romantic nature leads to tradegy.

Arnold Bennett's greatest novel spans 50 years, from the middle of the 19th century to the first decade of the 20th. The story ranges from the Potteries town of Bursley to Paris, as the contrasting lives of the two sisters unfold.

Silence to Scandal
Endo is one of Japan's finest writers. He is also a Catholic, a TV presenter and an individual in a country that normally thinks in groups.
In this rare interview, filmed in Japan and in London, Endo speaks from this unique viewpoint, an outsider poised between East and West. As he prepares to perform with his amateur operatic group, he reveals the dilemmas in his work from Silence to Scandal - his new novel published in Britain next week.
