Where the public sets the agenda

Earls Court in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is one of the most crowded places in Europe. Its ever-shifting population of 15,000 is a mixture of more than 90 nationalities. Not only is it a royal borough, it is also a red light district with a high level of prostitution, a large gay scene and three times the national average of drug overdoses.

' The real likelihood of the legend of Little Red Riding Hood is that the grandmother ate the wolf and used its skin as a bed rug.'
John Aspinall has always had the desire to protect animals from what he sees as their degradation and exploitation at the hands of men. In 1956 a lucky bet on the Cesarewitch enabled him to buy Howletts, the country estate where he has established breeding colonies of wild animals, many of them rare species. This film reveals the very personal relationship he has with his animals, based on the kind of trust and affection that makes a full-grown tiger a welcome guest in the Aspinall family's swimming-pool. While the rest of Britain's teenagers grew up in the freedom of the ' swinging 60s', 17-year-old Karen Armstrong dedicated herself to the disciplined life of a Roman Catholic nun. Seven years later she made the decision to leave and began a long struggle to come to terms with being a woman in the new world outside the convent walls.
