A Passion to Protect

on BBC Two England

' The real likelihood of the legend of Little Red Riding Hood is that the grandmother ate the wolf and used its skin as a bed rug.'
John Aspinall has always had the desire to protect animals from what he sees as their degradation and exploitation at the hands of men. In 1956 a lucky bet on the Cesarewitch enabled him to buy Howletts, the country estate where he has established breeding colonies of wild animals, many of them rare species. This film reveals the very personal relationship he has with his animals, based on the kind of trust and affection that makes a full-grown tiger a welcome guest in the Aspinall family's swimming-pool.
