While the rest of Britain's teenagers grew up in the freedom of the ' swinging 60s', 17-year-old Karen Armstrong dedicated herself to the disciplined life of a Roman Catholic nun. Seven years later she made the decision to leave and began a long struggle to come to terms with being a woman in the new world outside the convent walls.
