where the public sets the agenda The People's Palace
The Burrell Museum recently opened in Glasgow to much acclaim and a great fanfare of publicity. While this was going on Open Space slipped into The People's Palace, a museum on the other side of Glasgow, with Billy Connolly and found that you don't have to be famous, dead or a millionaire to have a place in history.

The fifth of eight programmes
Land of the Setting Sun
Japan is ' greying' - growing older - far faster than any other country. Until now it has had the youngest population of any advanced nation, but by early next century it is expected to be the oldest. This is partly because the Japanese live longer than anyone else. and partly because there has been an unprecedented drop in the birth-rate. In 40 years' time a quarter of the population will be over 65 years old, and it is predicted that this could lead to economic trouble and inter-generation conflict. The problem m§m old in Japan simply refuse to retire, even if they have the money to do lo Robin Denselow reports on the land where a 70-year-old former sales manager is delighted to find new employment cleaning the ashtrays outside Tokyo subway stations.

The fifth of eight programmes looking behind the doors of Westminster and Parliament.
Narrated by Anthony Quayle Order, Order
The Speaker of the House of Commons is responsible for order in the House. For seven years until his retirement at the end of the last Parliament this was the responsibility of The Rt Hon George Thomas. Befitting his role in Parliament, the Speaker lives ' above the shop' in a palatial residence where he entertains the country's great and famous. The Speaker is third in order of precedence of all the commoners in the land. In the Chamber, he alone decides who shall speak in a debate. It is his personality which must command the respect and obedience of MPs who elect him to see fair play.
