Arctic Wanderers. Each spring, nearly 200,000 caribou of northern Alaska and the Yukon begin one of the greatest overland journeys in the animal world. At the mercy of wolves and human hunters, the caribou struggle to reach their calving grounds at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. But here, beneath the coastal plain, lies oil, which means drilling and disturbance. If conservationists lose their battle, the balance between man, beast and the environment will be destroyed.
