by Dr R. G. Edwards
Five years ago the first test tube baby was born: now over 300 babies have been conceived in vitro. The technique was pioneered by physiologist Robert Edwards and obstetrician Patrick Steptoe. In the early days their efforts were considered unethical, even immoral, possibly dangerous. Now their methods have worldwide clinical application in the treatment of infertile couples. Dr Edwards reflects on the changes in attitude and examines the implications of new techniques such as embryo freezing and egg donation and experimentation on the human embryo.

Aroon, large and unlovely daughter of an Anglo-Irish family looks back from middle age to her childhood in the south of Ireland wondering why the lives of her nearest and dearest were so perplexingly unhappy. As the many memorable characters, both comic and tragic, tumble through her mind, it becomes wickedly obvious that Aroon didn't quite understand everything that she saw. Take the incident of her governess Mrs Brock...
