Kenneth Clark's personal view of civilisation across western Europe was an instant success when it was shown in 1969. He regarded art as humanity's greatest achievement and consolation, and succeeded in conveying this vision to his audience. The first programme in this 13-part documentary series covers the Dark Ages, from AD400 to AD1000.
Coinciding with this welcome repeat is a profile of Kenneth Clark the private man and public figure, on BBC2 tomorrow at 8.10pm.

For the next week poetry will be making impromptu appearances on BBC2, popping up unscheduled between programmes. One fixed point will be Poets'News each weekday evening after Newsnight.
