"We were dancing under the gallows," says a survivor of Terezin, the walled town north of Prague adapted by the Nazis as a Jewish ghetto, a staging post en route to Auschwitz. Ironically, it was also a place where Jewish art, above all music, could flourish, though suppressed elsewhere. Thus the Nazis could counter rumours of concentration camps and the Holocaust, as when a Red Cross delegation visited Terezin in 1944. Four composers, all to be transported from the town to die, stand out among the many artistic talents of the ghetto: Viktor Ullmann, Hans Krasa, Pavel Haas and Gideon Klein.
Tonight's film, shot on location in Terezin and featuring survivors and archive film, introduces tomorrow's BBC2 performance of music (at 9.40pm) from the town and subsequent programmes on Radio 3 during the next week.
