— Film-maker Molly i Dineen went to London
_ Zoo in August 1991 to make a film of modest intentions. Within a week of her arrival, it had been plunged into the most turbulent period of its history, as a massive cost-cutting exercise caused redundancies and robbed the zoo of a third of its animals.
Dineen's four-part portrait of the zoo, first shown in January, records fierce debate and bitter resentment as staff and management struggle to secure a future.
The new management team must cut costs and attract more visitors. One in three of the keepers will have to go. In this first programme, the selection process gets under way, and the keepers brace themselves for the prospect of having to leave the animals they have worked devotedly with all their lives.
