For nearly 20 years John Buchan, author of The Thirty-Nine Steps, wrote a book every year. He was a publisher, an MP and subsequently Governor-General of Canada. What was life like living with such an energetic man?
Like the violin playing of Paganini, who influenced him profoundly, Franz Liszt stretched the powers of the piano to previously unheard-of limits. Like Paganini he too travelled constantly, applauded as the supreme virtuoso of his instrument.
London saw Liszt as the Infant prodigy, as the glamorous sex-symbol and gifted virtuoso, and as the legendary and much venerated composer of old age.
David Wilde, winner of the International Liszt-Bartok competition in Budapest, tonight plays music from each period and talks about Liszt in London.

The number of children born blind is much smaller than it was; but, nowadays, a high proportion suffer other handicaps as well. Man Alive shows a film portrait of the Sunshine Home in Northwood, Middlesex, where blind children learn to prepare themselves for the outside world. Is enough being done to provide work and facilities for them to lead reasonably independent lives when they leave school?
