Pageantry and ceremonial provide a living link with our nation's past. Robert Hardy visits and explains some of Britain's most colourful ceremonies.

An Investiture is a ceremony which is uniquely the monarch's own - only when the reigning monarch personally nominates her representative can anyone else conduct an investiture. It is also The Queen's own prerogative to decide where the ceremony will take place and how many of her subjects she will honour.
Outside broadcast cameras were admitted to the State Ballroom, Buckingham Palace, for the first time to witness this event.
(Repeated: Friday, 9.0 pm. 'Just like talking to my own mother': pages 6-7. The Queen visits the BBC: Wednesday at 11.55 am, BBC2)

An entertainment for Saturday, presenting a live mixture of music, plays, poetry, prose, comedy, films, the visual arts - and a few surprises.
Introduced by Joe Melia with a little help from Henry Woolf, Jane Wood, Dave Hill
and from the studio audience.
Among the main events are:

9.15* Gladys Knight and the Pips
From Atlanta, Georgia, one of Tamla Motown's most successful recording groups - responsible for hit singles like "Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me". Tonight this group - who have sung together since their schooldays - make one of their rare appearances on British television.

The Fine Art of Goofing Off
From station KQED, San Francisco, some more ingenious cartoon variations on the theme of "Goofing Off" or "Don't do something, just stand there". This week's montage will include the "Big Audience Participation Show", "International Leisure Aptitude Tests", and "How To Make a Trombone".

10.0* The Millenarian
by E.A. Whitehead
with Tim Preece as The Tutor
David Troughton as Anthony
The last of three plays, written for "Full House", which explore the relationships of a student with his teachers - in tonight's play, with his Cambridge tutor.

Ram Narayan

10.45* Vernon Scannell
Poet and novelist, winner of the Heinemann Award for his book of poems "Masks of Love" in 1961. He's been a professional boxer and, during the war, he served with the Gordon Highlanders - an experience reflected in his poetry.
