Michael Strogoff is a young and gallant captain in the Imperial Guard who is chosen by Tsar Alexander II to carry out a long and arduous mission travelling 5,000 km through hostile territory during the Tartar rebellion of 1875. Strogoff has to make contact with the Archduke Dimitri , the brother of the Tsar, who is travelling in Siberia, and to give him information aimed at saving Siberia from the rebels.
In the first episode, as Michael Strogoff sets out on his journey, a former Colonel in the Imperial Guard, Ivan Ogareff , who is half-Tartar by birth, escapes from prison to join the Tartars and lead them in a war of independence.

July 1st 1916 - the first day of the Battle of the Somme - was the worst day in British military his- tory. In less than 24 hours 60.000 British soldiers became casualties; and nearly 20,000 of them died. The battle dragged on for another four and a half months. It turned a gracious part of northern France into a landscape like the moon's. It produced anger and cynicism, but also incredible gallantry and courage. During it 1,200,000 British, French and Germans were killed or wounded.
