Tonight from BBC South West Down Among the Donkeys
Angela Rippon investigates the remarkable story of how one woman, Betty Svendsen , devotes almost her whole life to caring for donkeys. At the sanctuary at Sidmouth, in South Devon, she looks after over 400 donkeys. The sanctuary is now a registered charity and MRS SVENDSEN has had to buy two farms to provide enough ground for the animals. Some of the donkeys are brought in by people who can no longer afford them as pets, but many have been the victim of gross cruelty and neglect - sometimes misused on the beaches, sometimes driven to exhaustion on scrap heaps.

The Story of Britain's Royal Builders and Collectors Told by Huw Wheldon in a series of nine programmes 5: The First Three Georges
The Trooping the Colour was first performed, Kew Gardens planted, and the Royal Academy founded under the first three Georges. Encouraged by George I and George II, Handel composed his greatest music and George III bought many paintings by Canaletto. The books that were his passion became the basis of the British Library in the British Museum. His Gold State Coach, the china he collected, and his Gainsboroughs reflect the confidence of the 18th century. Yet across its ordered landscapes hung the shadow of the mob and political rebellion.
Never a dull moment and matched at every point by a wealth of authoritative pictorial material. (YORKSHIRE POST) Both entertaining and informing. Incomparably stylish. (SUNDAY TIMES) Historical adviser J. H. PLUMB Producer MICHAEL GILL
