Caddie learns that her husband is having an affair, she responds to his violence by doing the 'unthinkable'. She leaves her comfortable middle-class home, taking her children with her, and sets out to lead an independent life.
Caddie takes the only job she can get, as a barmaid, in an attempt to build her new existence. This film, based on a true story, depicts her struggle against all the odds.
