"American opera" of 1946 is performed in English National Opera's highly acclaimed production by David Pountney , designed by David Fielding and starring leading ENO singers Janice Cairns and Lesley Garrett.
With a book by Elmer Rice (based on his Pulitzer
Prize-winning stage play) and lyrics by the poet
Langston Hughes , it combines elements both of opera and of Broadway song and dance in portraying an eventful 24 hours in the lives of the inhabitants of a New York tenement block.
The English National Opera Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by James Holmes.
