During the final stages of the civil war in Rwanda, a BBC Natural History Unit film crew entered the no-man's land between the warring sides in search of one of the world's rarest animals.
David Attenborough presents this investigation into the fate of Rwanda's mountain gorillas.
Before the war, there were fewer than 400 mountain gorillas left on the planet; how many remained was unknown. Their habitat, the remote Virunga volcanoes which straddle the borders of Rwanda and Zaire, was caught in the crossfire of this bitter conflict. The region has many enemies - trees are savaged by refugees desperate for firewood, poachers have returned and the forest is being mined. However, the situation was not completely hopeless; the crew were accompanied by Hutu workers from the vast refugee camps at Goma in Zaire, who once protected the gorillas and who chose to return to their charges.
Gorillas in the Mist is tomorrow at 8.30pm on BBC 1
