The Cinema Century season of great films to celebrate the centenary of the cinema begins with a biographical drama (allegedly based on William Randolph Hearst), directed by and starring Orson Welles.

After the death of famous newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane, reporters try to discover the truth about his life. What was he really like, and who was Rosebud, the name he spoke just before he died? Five people who knew him give five different impressions.

This year's Royal Television Society lecturer is writer and television dramatist Andrew Davies, whose credits include "A Very Peculiar Practice" and the recent adaptation of "Middlemarch". He talks about his early days as a writer, what lifts a television script above the ordinary and what, in his view, is wrong with the state of popular drama today.

Hugh Scully tells the story of how the American press baron
William Randolph Hearst (allegedly the inspiration for Orson
Welles's Citizen Kane, shown earlier today as the first film in the Cinema Century season) was obliged to sell some of his art collection in 1941 in Gimbels department store in New York. Having been forced into the sale by a cash deficit of$11 million, he sold only half of his amassed antiquities - the ones he had stored in a four-storey Bronx warehouse.
The sale gave ordinary people the chance to buy unique items at unbeatable prices. This documentary begins with archive footage of the sale, the treasures and some of Hearst's fabulous houses and goes on to trace the whereabouts and owners of some of the highly collectable items. A team of Antiques Roadshow-style experts helps Scully to unravel the stories behind some of the items and reassess their value.

The first showing on network television for this musical biography of rock legend Jim Morrison , starring Val Kilmer , Meg Ryan and Kyle MacLachlan
Oliver Stone's intense portrayal of the so-called "Lizard King" and demon prince of 60s rock begins in California in 1965, with the 22-year-old Morrison spending his time on the beach writing poetry and taking drugs. After dropping out of college with fellow student Ray Manzarek he formsthe Doors with two other musicians.
The remaining film catalogues Morrison's journey to an early grave in 1971, combining brilliantly staged concert sequences with his now legendary narcotic and sexual habits. Classic hits such as Riders on the Storm, Hello, I Love You, Break On
Through, Light My Fire and The End are all featured along the way.
