One of France's most adventurous choreographers, Maguy Marin's modern version of this popular ballet is more West Side Story than classical ballet. Filmed on location among the grey high-rise estates of Lyon, it tells the story of sad, old Dr Coppelius and his automaton doll Coppelia. A femme fatale in blonde wig and high heels, Coppelia is the star of Coppelius's home movies. She soon attracts the attention of street-wise Franz who hangs around the estate, and the jealousy of his girlfriend Swanilda.
