Coppelia

on BBC Two England

One of France's most adventurous choreographers, Maguy Marin's modern version of this popular ballet is more West Side Story than classical ballet. Filmed on location among the grey high-rise estates of Lyon, it tells the story of sad, old Dr Coppelius and his automaton doll Coppelia. A femme fatale in blonde wig and high heels, Coppelia is the star of Coppelius's home movies. She soon attracts the attention of street-wise Franz who hangs around the estate, and the jealousy of his girlfriend Swanilda.

Performed by Lyon Opera Ballet with the Orchestra of the Lyon Opera conducted by Kent Nagano.
