One of a series of programmes transmitted this week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in January 1945.

In the final part of his epic film, Claude Lanzmann goes to Corfu to meet some of the 122 surviving local Jews who were transported to Auschwitz.

Members of Warsaw's Jewish Ghetto Fighters also tell the story of the inspirational uprising of the doomed Jews of Warsaw. One of their number describes a feeling of serenity at the end of the uprising, recalling "I came out of the sewers, I was alone. I didn't meet a living soul ... I said to myself 'I'm the last Jew, I'll wait for morning, and for the Germans.'"
