By 1950 the days of the old Tibet were numbered. The writing on the wall was in Chinese characters. That mysterious, forbidden Tibet, walled off from the rest of the world, behind the Himalayas and seen by only a handful of foreigners, was about to be swept away for ever.
The Chinese had long claimed Tibet to be part of China. This film, compiled from hitherto unseen film of both Chinese and Tibetan origin, shows what went on in Tibet after the Chinese take-over of the country: the journey the Dalai Lama made to Peking in 1954; the uprising of the Tibetans against the Chinese; the flight into India of the Dalai Lama and 100,000 Tibetans; the destruction of a culture-out of some 3,000 monasteries, parts of only 13 are believed to remain today.
