Lamentation of the Dead Christ at the Arena Chapel, Padua
Giotto, like many great artists, seems to have been most inspired by tragic themes, and his austere style is suited to portraying austere events. The Lamentation, called ' pieta ' in Italy, is the most intense of all the scenes in the Padua chapel. Every shape laments. Grief permeates the whole composition.
