They put acid in his nose drops, poisoned his food, machine-gunned his car. Assassins have been trying to kill Hussein ever since he became King of Jordan at 17. He has survived war with Israel and fought a civil war with Palestinians. At 42, he is one of the best known but most isolated leaders in the Middle East. Now, once again, he is one of the central figures in the moves towards a peace settlement.
In this profile Jack Pizzey talks to Hussein at his palace in Amman. The King is also shown in the desert with his Bedouin tribes, on army manoeuvres, and at his summer palace on the Gulf of Aqaba.

Two weeks ago on The World About Us 'Yumi Yet' showed how Papua New Guinea leapt in one bound from an almost stone-age tribal culture to political independence and a seat at the UN. Now Ileksen takes the story one stage further: only two years after independence Papua New Guinea held its first General Election to elect a British-style parliamentary Government.
Although some candidates still wear tribal paint and feathers, they soon show they have nothing to learn about the hustings - they took to the platform and the loudhailer with the skill of old campaigners and gave us a lesson in well-mannered 'Ileksen-eering.'
