Young Children Need Full-Time Mothers
Do working mothers neglect their children? At present in Britain more than 200,000 children under five are left all day long without mothers.
Dr Mia Kellmer Pringle believes that unsatisfactory substitute care can seriously damage such children. Many will do badly at school and have difficulty forming loving relationships as adults.
Because of these risks, mothers with children under five should not have to go out to work: they should be paid to stay at home.
DR PRINGLE is Director of the National Children's Bureau. She argues her personal case before an invited audience at the Royal Institution, including psychologists, working mothers, employers and others who believe that a young mother's place need not be in the home.
