Xolile Yawa is the most outstanding black South
African runner of the decade. In Under the Skin this week, he explores the dilemma of talented citizens obliged to pursue their life ambitions on apartheid's terms.
Recruited by a gold mine, Yawa is given a wage, a car and generous training facilities. In return, he devoted himself to gruelling, all-year-round competition, on track, road and cross-country. His 10km time would have placed him fourth at the Seoul Olympics - but for the international sporting boycott against South African athletes.
Although he supports action against injustice, he craves the chance to compete with the world's best.

Shipbuilders in Sunderland closed at the end of last year. With no prospect of using his skills as a loftsman in Britain, he took a contract in an American shipyard.
While Elsie spends lonely evenings at home watching Come Dancing, Brian spends his spare time in search of the white tuxedo he has always wanted for those special dance evenings back home.

This film looks at how the cinema of the 40s transformed the Mexican Revolution into popular mythology. It goes behind the scenes of the massively popular soap operas, listens to songs of urban low life and visits old-style dance halls and mobile street discos.
