An eight-part series. 5: City Limits
Mexico City, the largest
Latin American city, is the melting pot for an astonishing variety of different forms of popular culture.
This film looks at how the cinema of the 40s transformed the Mexican Revolution into popular mythology. It goes behind the scenes of the massively popular soap operas, listens to songs of urban low life and visits old-style dance halls and mobile street discos. It also watches traditional festivals, ranging from the Day of the Dead to the cult of the Virgin of Guadalupe, where religious objects and icons are subjected to endless, often satirical, variations.
