Professionals wield power.
What motivates them? What attitudes and ideas lurk behind their job titles? To whom are they accountable? Opera Producers with David Pountney Nicholas Hytner Graham Vick
Not so long ago, opera seemed irrelevant to all but a small and rich minority. In the last few years, however, a new generation of producers has revitalised this art form and enticed a growing audience to see and applaud their work.
What has been the secret of their success? Where do their ideas come from? How true are they to the composers' intentions?

What, oh what, have the BBC done to Alexei Sayle? As an 87-year-old pensioner and long-time fan of Mr Sayle's work, I was appalled at the way his tasteless strings of four-letter obscenities have been cut out, presumably to render him 'fit for family viewing'. My mother, in particular, was deeply upset at the exclusion of one of her favourite characters, Mr Sweary, the foul-mouthed Cockney who says s...., p...., b......... w.... over and over again. So come on, BBC producers, spare a thought for us senior citzens by giving us something we can enjoy. Unmitigated filth.
