with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra.
The brilliant American conductor explores the enigma of Jean Sibelius and conducts a performance of his Sixth Symphony.
While other composers are mixing cocktails of various hues, I am offering the public pure spring water.
SIBELIUS, 1923
Tilson Thomas believes the Sixth to be an unduly neglected masterpiece. Using the imagery and language of television, he shows Sibelius already in creative crisis at 58, foreshadowing a mysterious silence he maintained for the last
30 years of his life. Sound BRENDAN SHORE Lighting BRENDAN CARR

The season of films from the 1988 festival continues with a dramatic and highly original film from Madagascar. Tabataba starring
Francois Botozandry Lucien Dakadisy To a small village. isolated in the valleys of eastern Madagascar comes a stranger bringing news of momentous events that will change things forever. Disorder and agitation overtake the credulous villagers as they fall prey to hearsay and fantasy - observed with wry detachment by wise old Bakanga and with astonishment by the young boy, Solo. Set in French-ruled Madagascar in 1947, the film reflects the vivid storytelling in a tradition where history is handed down orally - tabataba means the spreading of rumours.
Screenplay by RAYMOND RAJAONARIVELO.
ROBERT ARCHER. JEROME TONNERRE Produced by JACQUES LE GLOU Directed by RAYMOND RAJAONARIVELO
(French and Malagasy dialogue with English subtitles. First showing on British television).
