Barlinnie Prison, Glasgow. Two young criminals talk about a man they punched, kicked, dragged by the hair, tried to throw over a bridge. It was an unprovoked, unmotivated assault.
Alan Finney is now serving his second life sentence. He stabbed a bus crew, but can't explain why. Yet he's outraged when old ladies get mugged. Wayne is 22, black, and a victim. He was beaten up at a London nightspot - for no reason that he, or the police, can discover. He's lost an eye; he's also lost his confidence. Alexandra Connor was attacked and nearly strangled. Thanks to her assailants, she says, she's become a successful painter and novelist.
Senseless violence is hard to anticipate and prevent. Can it be understood?
