Farmers in the Firing Line Throughout the 1980s agriculture has been spared the pain of restructuring that industry has had to bear. But it is in the firing line. As the cost of agricultural subsidies becomes ever more unattractive to politicians, farmers are effectively being warned to shape up, or close up shop.
John Fryer reports on how farmers are responding to the challenge of behaving like other businessmen, and on whether politicians will have the nerve to force them to do so. Producer DAVID ASH

The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie
Nominated this year for an Oscar as the best documentary,
Marcel Ophuls 's compelling film is an investigation into the life of the notorious 'Butcher of Lyons', tracing his extraordinary career after the Second World War up to his recent trial in France.
Preparing the ground by contrasting the memories of childhood friends and military colleagues with the testimony of French witnesses to his wartime brutalities, Ophuls sets out to reveal the pattern of Barbie's highly successful post-war activities.
Filming in the USA. he elicits devastating evidence of the depth of the American complicity in employing known Nazis as agents in the new 'war' against communism. And in Bolivia, where various military dictatorships found a use for Barbie's peculiar talents, Ophuls talks to Barbie's neighbours, his gardener and fellow Nazis - painting a picture of a man at ease with family, work and life.
Then, in 1983, extradition to
France and, most astonishing of all, his trial in Lyons - the appearance in the dock of a wizened little man defended by an enigmatic and controversial lawyer.
Ophuls, the director of the acclaimed masterpiece The Sorrow and the Pity, distils this staggering range of material into a thrilling and seamless whole.
A monumental work, already lauded at the film festivals of Cannes and London.
... (Ophuls) uncovers a horror comic story of adventure and conspiracy.
