presented by David Davies , who launches a year long BBC initiative: it's aim, to support and encourage community projects, designed to improve the quality of life throughout Britain.
For over 20 years, the BBC's regional programmes have chronicled a period of change. Entire industries, the life-blood of their communities, have disappeared. Tonight, all these regions join together to show there is hope where you may least expect it, and preview the projects and events to be featured by the BBC throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland during the coming year. Regional information will be broadcast at the end of the programme. Researcher CHRISTINE PALMER Directors

Berthold Lubetkin
Born in Georgia in 1901, Berthold Lubetkin is one of the most outstanding and influential architects in Britain. His life has spanned the Russian Revolution and two World Wars. Finally, in 1982 he was awarded the highest honour the RIBA can grant - the Royal Gold Medal, in belated recognition of his achievements. Best known for the abstract elegance of the Penguin Pool at London Zoo, he remains an isolated figure constantly fighting bureaucracy and indifference; he has remained an unapologetic champion of the ideals of modernism while fiercely attacking many of its most celebrated exponents. In tonight's Arena Richard Rogers ,
Peter Palumbo , Lord Zuckerman and others assess the unique influence that Lubetkin has had on generations of architects.

York he is sure that he'll find sex, adventure and money. What the 'cowboy' finds is just one friend - Ratso Rizzo. This odd couple strike up one of the most unusual partnerships in screen history. John Schlesinger 's modern classic is intermittently sad, funny, brutal and always gripping, and features a memorable performance from Hoffman, hot favourite for an Oscar with his role in this year's Rain Man.
