Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, at the age of 11, the Viennese artist Georg Eisler became a refugee from Austro-fascism and spent the war years as an art student in Manchester.
In 1986 he began a series of return visits to the scene of his exile and has produced a cycle of paintings of Manchester in which his memories of an ugly, foggy city in wartime merge with his perception of a present-day industrial landscape he now finds beautiful. In his
