During the next six months, Music in Camera will be providing a platform for 24 recitals.
In programmes linked only by the intimate nature of the performances, chamber music classics will rub shoulders with lesser-known music dating back to the beginnings of the European music tradition, and other works so recent they are still to be published. Kiri Te Kanawa and Roger Vignoles open the series with a programme of French song including operatic extracts as well as some Of CANTELOUBE'S 'Songs of the Auvergne'. In conversation with Sue MacGregor , Dame Kiri sheds light on her own approach to recital singing.

The first of two programmes
The British in China 1920-1939 It was business which took the British to China, not dreams of imperial conquest. Western business wealth created the celebrated waterfront at Shanghai. It was a modem city as some who made their lives there in the 1920s and 30s recall. For the British 'missey' there was a household of servants, for 'master' the club, and for the sailors, the many notorious 'cabarets'.

Leopard - a Darkness in the Grass
Survival on the hot plains of Africa is a tightrope between life and death, even for the big cats. The leopard is a shy and elusive prowler, seldom ever seen by visitors to Kenya's most magnificent game reserve, the Masai Mara. The extraordinary and hazardous events in the daily life of one particular leopard and her cubs are revealed in an intimate portrait of an animal that has rarely been filmed before. Her wariness of elephants, a clash with a cheetah for possession of prey, and the threat from lions that could easily kill her cubs, show that even this powerful predator takes part in the continual struggle for life.

From the 'girl-seeing-ceremony' of southern India to the 'last American virgins' of California, it's the young lovers themselves who explain how they manage the tension between love and law.
