A global celebration of birds narrated by Magnus Magnusson

The hottest parts of earth lie in the tropics where rainfall mostly governs the seasons. Even in deserts a few remarkable birds survive among hot rocks and sand. Seasonal fires in grassland scatter animals, but provide bounty for birds. Swirling clouds of quelea breed in millions when rain eventually brings food.
Half the world's birds live in the tropics. Among them are two feathered jewels never before filmed - the wire-tailed manakin of Venezuela and Wallace's standardwing, a bird of paradise thought to be extinct for years - both with fabulous displays.

The last of five programmes written and presented by David Dimbleby Walking on Coals
In 1980, two years after filming the first four parts of the series, David Dimbleby returned to South Africa in search of change. He found school boycotts at the Cape, improved conditions for blacks in the cities, but growing poverty in the homelands. The government Minister for Black Affairs defended the 'tortoise pace' of the Afrikaner bureaucracy, but growing black protest already hinted at violence to come. 'This is a big thing,' said one student, 'the people are really mad.'

From Stage to Screen
This week Franco Zeffirelli 's new feature film of VERDI'S opera Otello, with Placido Domingo in the title role, opens in London.

For Zeffirelli has not only adapted the work to the screen; he has made major alterations and additions to it. This programme tells the story of Zeffirelli's radical reinterpretation of the opera. Those taking part include Franco Zeffirelli Placido Domingo Katia Ricciarelli
