The last of five programmes written and presented by David Dimbleby Walking on Coals
In 1980, two years after filming the first four parts of the series, David Dimbleby returned to South Africa in search of change. He found school boycotts at the Cape, improved conditions for blacks in the cities, but growing poverty in the homelands. The government Minister for Black Affairs defended the 'tortoise pace' of the Afrikaner bureaucracy, but growing black protest already hinted at violence to come. 'This is a big thing,' said one student, 'the people are really mad.'
