The Romany Trail
The first of two programmes Into Africa
Gypsy music is the means by which the Romany people have preserved their legends and history throughout the world.
From Appleby, England, we trace the ' roots ' of the Romany people to the nomadic tribes of North India. Then we follow The Romany Trail down the Nile, to discover the hitherto unknown gypsy tribes of Egypt, spreading from the temples of Luxor to the fortune-tellers, fire-eaters, puppeteers and exorcists of old Cairo.
The trail then leads across Africa into Spain, where the greatest gypsy flamenco dancers and singers still live. Finally we follow the annual pilgrimage from Spain to the festival of Saintes Mariesde-la-Mer in France.

Germany Under (he British
A series of five programmes which looks at British rule in Germany after the Second World War.
Written by Patrick O'DONOVAN Narrated by Leo McKern 3:Out of the Dark
It was in purging German intellectual life of the taint of Nazism that the British were at their best. They worked by example rather than precept. The Occupation newspaper, Die Welt, was modelled on The Times. What had once been Dr Goebbels' radio was now run like the BBC. Children who had been taught to count in bombs and fighter planes found that school could be fun. The Germans were like the prisoners in Fidelio, says a British teacher, coming out of their cells into the daylight. Among those taking part: Sir Robert Birley , Sir Hugh Greene Peter von Zahn , Lord Barnetson Dr Gerd Bucerius

Her interpretation of the complex character of Hedda Gabler, a moody, disillusioned and dominant woman frustrated by her recent marriage to a weak. ineffectual husband and trapped by her own rigid social conformity, has been described by Clive Barnes in the New York Times as 'a merciless yet beautiful performance, reaching its terrible and great climax in paroxysms of pure triumph'.
