Germany Under (he British
A series of five programmes which looks at British rule in Germany after the Second World War.
Written by Patrick O'DONOVAN Narrated by Leo McKern 3:Out of the Dark
It was in purging German intellectual life of the taint of Nazism that the British were at their best. They worked by example rather than precept. The Occupation newspaper, Die Welt, was modelled on The Times. What had once been Dr Goebbels' radio was now run like the BBC. Children who had been taught to count in bombs and fighter planes found that school could be fun. The Germans were like the prisoners in Fidelio, says a British teacher, coming out of their cells into the daylight. Among those taking part: Sir Robert Birley , Sir Hugh Greene Peter von Zahn , Lord Barnetson Dr Gerd Bucerius
