on BBC Two England

[Starring] Glenda Jackson
with Timothy West, Peter Eyre, Patrick Stewart, Jennie Linden
In Trevor Nunn's film adaptation Of THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY production, Glenda Jackson heads a distinguished cast as Ibsen's enigmatic and tragic heroine. Her interpretation of the complex character of Hedda Gabler, a moody, disillusioned and dominant woman frustrated by her recent marriage to a weak. ineffectual husband and trapped by her own rigid social conformity, has been described by Clive Barnes in the New York Times as 'a merciless yet beautiful performance, reaching its terrible and great climax in paroxysms of pure triumph'.
