A year ago today the British Steel Corporation closed the Consett steelworks, ending a long tradition of iron- and steel-making that stretched back 140 years. Overnight the reason for a whole community's existence was removed. Consett now lives in fear of beconn ing a ghost town.
Ten thousand new jobs are needed over the next five years just to keep the area's unemployment down to the national average.
Over the last year this programme has followed the fortunes of the town through the eyes of ex-steel-workers and a dedicated group of job creators who are trying to sell the town to businessmen.

The first of three programmes
In an arid sand bowl amid towering cliffs, the spirits of the dead assemble and chatter. In this most ho!y desert, in the oven heat of day, John Romer, an Egyptologist, listens and feels the presence of the past.
Setting out on an energetic journey through ancient times, he scales the pyramids of Giza, shoots the cataracts of Aswan and "dies" at Sakkara.
With passion and prejudice he explores and explains his view of the ancient civilisation: "Romer's Egypt".

The action of the play is set in an RAF hospital for Aircrew in 1944. George Nunn, an RAF Corporal ground crew, finds himself the odd man out...
"As an evocation of fear and loathing in a bomber, all upper lips soggy with sweat, it was memorable." (Sunday Times)
"By the end I was on tenterhooks lest the crippled, wholly unreal bomber should destroy itself on landing." (Daily Telegraph)
